Here is everything you need to know about booking your November resit as a private candidate with Exam Centre London (ECL).
It is a common misconception that you can resit any GCSE subject in November. This is incorrect.
The November series is strictly limited by the exam boards (AQA, Edexcel, OCR) to:
GCSE Mathematics (Foundation and Higher tiers)
GCSE English Language
If you wish to resit Science, History, English Literature, or any other subject, you must wait until the Summer 2027 exam series.
Mark these dates in your calendar immediately:
September 25, 2026: Recommended deadline to register with Exam Centre London to guarantee your seat without incurring late fees.
October 4, 2026: The absolute final JCQ deadline for standard entries. Any registrations after this date will incur significant "Late Entry" and "Very Late Entry" penalty fees from the exam boards.
November 3 – 9, 2026 (Approx): The exam window. You will sit your papers during the first week of November.
January 14, 2027: Results Day! You will receive your new grades in time to update college or university applications.
It is a Legal Requirement (If you are under 18)
In the UK, it is a condition of funding that students who do not achieve a Grade 4 in Maths and English Language must continue studying them. Retaking them in November allows you to get them out of the way so you can focus entirely on your A-Levels or BTEC courses for the rest of the year.
The Content is Fresh in Your Mind
You just spent the last two years studying this syllabus. If you wait until Summer 2027, you will likely forget key formulas and essay structures. Taking the exam in November capitalizes on the knowledge you already have.
Small Improvements Make a Big Difference
Many students miss out on a Grade 4 by just 2 or 3 marks. A targeted six weeks of revision in September and October is usually more than enough to push you over the boundary.
If your current school or college will not allow you to resit with them, or if you are a home-educated student, you must register as a Private Candidate.

Find Your UCI Number: Look at your August Statement of Results. You will see a 13-character code called a Unique Candidate Identifier (UCI). You need this so the exam board can link your new result to your old ones.
Choose Your Exam Board: Check whether you previously sat AQA, Edexcel, or OCR. You can stick with the same board, or switch to a new one if you prefer a different exam style.
Submit Your Application: Go to the Exam Centre London Booking Page. Select your subject, tier (Higher/Foundation), and submit your details.
Pay the Fee: Exam fees cover the board's entry cost, invigilation, administration, and secure certificate delivery.
Need Access Arrangements? If you had extra time, a reader, or a scribe for your summer exams, you must inform us immediately upon booking. The deadline to apply for access arrangements for November is extremely tight. We will need to see your Form 8 or medical evidence as soon as possible.
With the exam window so close, you don't have a full academic year to revise. Your focus should be purely on past papers, exam technique, and targeting your weakest topics.
